What do you think of un-schooling??

it is not that there is no curriculum for most 'unschooled' child, it is 'un' structured in how it is taught. in other words, they go at a pace that is beneficial to the child while keeping their interest to learn. it helps to redirect them and their focus to bring them up to speed or help them advance! i know that parents need to be involved too and help to teach 'real world' learning and not expect or rely on the public schools to teach this. i am a public school graduate and if my parents weren't involved in teaching me things at home i wouldn't know half of what i know today!

if you are 'un schooling' and teaching a child to garden you can focus on teaching them the history of how that plant may have developed over the years from what it originally was-Biology lesson too! or my favorite since i was able to teach my autistic nephew a few new things to help him focus-about bugs and how some are beneficial and others are pests! you can teach them different aspects of math by predicting the harvest or the time to harvest through using the almanac and the frost dates, and average bounty per plant per year!

i admit that not all parents that are 'un-schooling' their children are actually using their children's home time to teach them useful things. and some are probably using it to exploit them to cook, clean and do other household chores instead of learning. (those are useful skills too! but are not teaching new things)

many news articles don't give the time to get a full story. they try to get the 'wow', 'that's sad', or 'how can that happen?' response. if you don't question it further and do your own research you would never know the other side of the story that is still untold!

How would you know who doesn't have an education. I homeschool my kids for a number of reasons. Public school isn't what it was years ago. I know alot of wonderful homeschoolers who have a very good work ethic. Personally, I wouldn't want to work for you with your attitude.

THOSE are the ones I don't like. Unschooling would make me one of those simply because my kid would NOT cooperate..or I'd have to become a child abuser to get anything done...no thanks. We'll stick to our curriculum and everybody else can do it how they want

Oh I understand, it would work for my oldest, and possiably my youngest, but my sister who was chartered school the last 2 years of high school would've been a wreck, sleeping till noon, boys and online games were her life.

EXACTLY. Which is why I am against it really. What it will boil down to is that THOSE parents who made the mistake of not educating and not having anyone to answer to will have children who grow up that will live off of my kids taxpayer dollars. It doesn't make our society better..it has potential to make it worse. NOW if everyone who unschooled had to have their kids meet standardized test requirements to prove they are in fact not falling behind in their education........I'd be ALL FOR IT. Bottom line is SOMEBODY has to take responsibility for those kids. I hope that responsibility will not fall back to my kids in the future. Know what I mean? Otherwise..I have no issue

redux - you can get into college without math skills, they just require you to take pre-math and math classes by setting required courses for a degree.

Trust me on this, it's the sole reason why I am even in a math class knowing full and well that I do horribly with math. Just about every degree requires certain skill sets such as Math, Humanities, Natural Sciences and so on.

Because the person who wrote that article, did just what you are doing. They met one or two families and based on those couple of families and a minimal amount of research, they are drawing conclusions about a whole group of people and their way of life. It does a disservice to me and my family when people use one single article (or one family they know) to decide on whether or not the way I raise my kids is meaningful. And the parent wasn't quoted saying that, that was a statement by the person who wrote the article. They were para-phrasing, to meet their own ends, what the parent said. The article really is very poorly done. They say at one point: Unschooling is not homeschooling. In homeschooling, children get the same structure, discipline and curriculum they get at school. They just get it from their parents. . Again, this is not a true statement. Homeschooling can be school-at-home like it says in the article, but it more often is not. It is more often an amalgamation of many different options available to homeschoolers.

Most of what you said there is incredibly offensive. I love my country and one thing that makes this country great is homeschooling. I have the option to choose how I want my children to receive their education. Would you like me to give you a list of great leaders who have been homeschooled? You really have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to getting a "real high school education and certificate". I suggest you do more research about homeschooling before telling me my kids are going to be stuck flipping burgers.

Edited to add: Please tell my husband who is a disabled Navy veteran, fireman, and paramedic that he obviously doesn't love his country because he chooses to homeschool his kids.

Perhaps we should all learn that the media is skewed.

Ok Saddina, those are the ones I am worried about.

The future of this society depends on having educated people available to run it. People who have spent their entire lives learning nothing frighten me.

There are plenty of examples of kids coming out of public school and knowing nothing truly useful. The idea that the future of our society rests on the results of most public schools frightens me.

I have to admit..
I'm a perfect example of this...
