Maybe, but college admission is very competitive. People who score higher on the SATs are given preferential treatment, scholarships, etc. at better schools.

How would you know who doesn't have an education. I homeschool my kids for a number of reasons. Public school isn't what it was years ago. I know alot of wonderful homeschoolers who have a very good work ethic. Personally, I wouldn't want to work for you with your attitude.

I 100% agree, public school has gone down hill in many, many ways. I am FAR from being against homeschooling- I think its ok, when done by dedicated parents within a system that has checks and testing to make sure the children are, in fact learning. But heres the thing, if I am an employer, and I am told by an applicant, "I was homschooled all my life" Well, ok, but maybe I need to see the credentials of your parents/teachers so I know just what kind of education you really have. How in the world do I know you really know what your doing? I worry about kids and their futures.

I REALLY am interested to know how a child who is unschooled gets into Harvard or Yale? Personally, I want my children to excell and be a leader of industry. I want my child to be able to have options. How do children get into Ivy League schools without a highschool diploma from a regular school? I am pretty sure the guys running the fortune 5000 companies went to traditional schools. Its where you make lifelong contacts as well.

In my business, we use patent attorneys, graphic designers, alot of technical people that had to go to alot of school to learn to do their jobs. And they are paid well for their time. Kinda like doctors- they spend years and years in school, not unschool, and they charge alot because their time is worth it.

I think the unschooling thing is just not a good idea for the majority. Homeschool works for a few, but by and far, this great nation was built by amazing inteligent people who went to traditional public schools.
Again, I apologise if my thoughts offended you, I am not trashing homeschool (as a whole) I just live a diffferent life than alot of people and have seen what happens in the big big world and how people treat each other differently based on job status and income and success, and how different life is when your not barely scraping by every month.

When our daughter wanted a tattoo, we said- Ya know, I bet the CEO of Proctor and Gamble doesnt have one. Thats where we want our kids to elevate themselves to. To see that huge success is possible and within reach. But I dont think that can be said of unschoolers. I will say I'm not that well educated about unschooling, but I like to think I'm pretty good at figuring things out!

Suzette, a child gets into Harvard or Yale by their intelligence. Coupled with SAT scores, public service and chosen charities. Those two schools are very picky, and the majority of kids these days dont aim THAT high unless their parents have money. They are two of teh five most expensive schools to attend. If you are aiming to a top attorney, good choice. If not, who cares!!!

The only person who I know personally that was homeschooled had to take remedial classes to get into college, very sad and has put her behind her peers by 2 years. suzettex5, I understand what you are saying. My son, who attends college not on a scholarship or grant but from my checkbook because he works for me during the summer for his tuition, sees many young people attending college who really don't want to be there for anything other than the parties and the s*x. They are flunking out and will not be returning next year. My son, who will be 19 next week, keeps asking me why people his age are so irresponsible and feel entitled. So yes, I understand what you are saying. This is just my personal experience.

That is why a lot of students start at a community college level and transfer up. High school education really becomes nil when you start taking college courses, even at a community college level. As long as you have the grades and class requirements and your classes transfer to the other school you can get into an Ivy league school through community college and a lot of self motivated effort.

I personally could are less for the Ivy league and Elite. I prefer colleges and universities that will actually teach me something I want to know rather than give me an excuse to be high and mighty. If I end up at Michigan State or University of Michigan after I get an associates from a community college, I'm fine with that. If I get an associates degree and get a good enough job with that, I'm fine there too. I don't need a Harvard degree to feel like I can do well in life. You can also get a lot of 4 year degrees in the same courses as High rank schools in most community colleges.

Degree's are one thing, Certificates are another and Connections are the last. If you have all three you may as well be set for life. If you have one or two out of the three, that isn't bad either. Plenty of highly skilled workers have no actual degree, just a certificate of program completion. Many other people have dropped out of high school and gone to be successful because of who they know.

I doubt you know enough unschoolers to say whether or not they reach for the stars. Do you know any?

I tell my kids that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves as long as they are prepared to work hard for it. I doubt that is any different than what any child in traditional school is told.

It is a type of homeschooling.

ETA, if you were referring to my comment in the above post, I realized my mistake and went back to change it.

Ouch.......Over the years, I have known 100s of schooled at home children. It is/was the rare one that had dificulty with "socialization, but that was usually because of other circumstances.
Thanks for saying none of us has an education, and are only capable of flipping burgers
