What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

Something I wanted to add, honey or sugar is fine for some types of infections for the drawing and swelling reduction. With a staph infection, trust me, I don't need a lab report to see that's what this is, it's kinda acts like a yeast infection, ie; it will feed off of the carbs in the sugar and blow up. Not cool. Another thing I did, I gave my Sydney at least a half hour in the tub with very warm water, as in the hand when testing the water, is starting to turn a bit red. An hour would be better. This will keep the scab soft and allow the infection to exit the body this way. If you combine an antibiotic with the baths and the topical iodine.....you've about covered it all, until you can start extracting the built up puss in the wound.

I truly think if you do all of this, and don't skimp, your duck will be absolutely fine in the end. Seriously, I do. I know it's hard facing this there by yourself, but follow through and all will be well.

Oye ok, my vet always had me use sugar on the horses for drawing purposes. Never to leave in it just to draw and then flush and pack with neosporin. Always worked beautifully. Is is different for ducks or different depending on the type of infection maybe?

I'll grab the iodine tomorrow, and since I can't get plain penicillin I will order the fish mox and overnight it. I feel confident I can get this taken care of and not lose her just not sure she will ever have normal use of the leg. I wish I had realized there was more going on than just the sprain, by the time it was clear it was already not good. I really wish I had been much harder on the vet to do her work. I backed off because they made it clear that if I did something they didn't "okay" that they would not see her again and I would have to find a new place. Knowing there aren't any other vets here that treat ducks I caved. I shouldn't have, she didn't do anything that made this better and I feel like I lost a week because of it. Ugh!
Yes. No sugar, just remove the pus!

I promise, no sugar! Didn't realize it was so much different so I will do the iodine and vaseline. She gets a lot of baths a day between 20 and 30 minutes each time and it does keep the scab from getting too hard but it doesn't drain at all unless I have her in the sling/chair which she hates but deals with after she realizes I'm not taking her out of it. Even when she's in there though it doesn't drain a lot just barely. If I pull the scab downwards then it drains really easy but that causes her more discomfort and I can't sit there holding it open all day either. By the next morning it's all built back up again because she can't stay in the chair without supervision so she's on the memory foam mattress instead. I don't mind removing the scab but I would be hesitant to do more than that because I'm so worried about hitting a tendon or something! This would be easier for me if it was on her foot.

I will pick up the iodine and duramycin 10 tomorrow. Should I keep giving her smz in the mean time (tonight and tomorrow morning) or stop?

Haunted, this statement really does sum things up. Especially because I wasn't ignoring it, I sought vet treatment when I saw that it was infected and I felt let down in a major way. I used to lurk here because the community is just full of amazing people with wonderful first hand experience, that was why I decided to join and post. I know I have no help here at the house, hubby has a weak stomach, daughter wants to be a vet and I know would help if I asked her but while she is a wonderful helper the duck wouldn't be easy for her to hold and I think it would upset her because it's her duck. Thankfully while Ducktor can be a royal pita at times, she is 99% of the time pretty awesome to deal with so I don't mind being the only one when I have to poke around on her. But back to my point, I feel a lot more confident with the path we are on now than I did before because of everyone's input!

Poultry pus is not like human , cat, dog, horse pus, it's hard, like cheese and needs to be tweezered out. In mammals, you just lance the abcess and it drains, not poultry... slice and dig, that is the only way. Here is a picture of some pus that I took out of an infected mouth.

That's about what it looks like behind the scab but if I pull that off how do I know if anything left inside is more pus or tendon? That's the part that scares me lol. That picture was a good clear one, ty.

ETA - sorry for all of the questions. I feel like they are dumb but really I'm just more scared because it's her hock instead of her foot.

ETA again - sorry, just don't want this question to get missed do you think it's better to stop the smz until I get the duramycin or should I keep giving the smz until I can switch?

I think you need to slice open the swelling. It's going to bleed, a lot. When I have done sinus surgery, which bleed a lot, too, I slice it open, wait for the bleeding to stop, then I remove the pus. If you're lucky, it will come out in one piece, but you'll probably have to dig.

I just had a thought... is Rimadyl an anticoagulant like ibuprofen? If so, you'll probably want to not give her any until after the surgery. Do some research.

I couldn't find anything that specifically states blood thinner for Rimadyl (or maybe I'm not using correct terminolgy) but she hasn't had anything since this morning since it's only once a day. Thank you for those anatomy photos!!! I was trying to find exactly what you posted and I kept coming up with images of cooked legs which was clearly not going to help me lol. I was able to remove the scab with the lovely thick backing and keep the bleeding fairly controlled while doing so. I think I got it all but it wasn't an easy area to really see clearly even with flushing and moving things around. Hopefully it still helps. At least it's open so it can drain freely now. Thank you again, those pics were exactly what I was trying to find.
