What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

I couldn't find anything that specifically states blood thinner for Rimadyl (or maybe I'm not using correct terminolgy) but she hasn't had anything since this morning since it's only once a day. Thank you for those anatomy photos!!! I was trying to find exactly what you posted and I kept coming up with images of cooked legs which was clearly not going to help me lol. I was able to remove the scab with the lovely thick backing and keep the bleeding fairly controlled while doing so. I think I got it all but it wasn't an easy area to really see clearly even with flushing and moving things around. Hopefully it still helps. At least it's open so it can drain freely now. Thank you again, those pics were exactly what I was trying to find.
It's been my experience that when all the pus isn't removed, it comes back, so you'll know soon enough. As for draining, again, they're different, so they don't drain the way you're used to seeing in the other animals you have.

Glad you were able to get it out!

here's a list but not sure still.

Just got off the phone with my Pharmacist friend. Rimadyl does have blood thinner properties. What he figures is a good 48 hrs to have it clear the system sufficiently before you do the surgery. Also, feed the duck kale, broccoli and any of the dark green vegetables. They have vitamin K in them and this will help with the half life of the drug.

Stop the Rimadyl and then give it 48hrs. The iodine should help keep things static and even though the antibiotic will not clear the hock of the pus, it can help keep this poor thing from going totally septic and damaging other organs.

Edited for stupidity, for not reading you have already done the surgery. I am so glad you were able to get it done.

Casportpony.....I cannot thank you enough for helping out here. The practical and book knowledge you have is amazing and was very much needed here.

Thank you Haunted. I had to lance it anyway to open it back up so stuff could drain since the bleeding wasn't as bad as it was last time I tried I went ahead with it. I did withhold the Rimadyl this morning though as a precaution. She does have actual drainage happening, like a yellowish thick substance seems to harden up fairly quickly and is very similar to what ends up at the thick stuff on the end of the scab. I ended up having to call off work myself this morning because I completely lost my voice and since I spend my day on the phone, that wasn't going to work. I went to the store and got the iodine and Duramycin earlier and am dosing her at the 800 mg dose. Swelling wise it's not as bad as it was last night, I believe there still may be some pus left behind but I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm looking at pus or tendon. Never thought I'd have this much trouble with something like that! I would think the tendon would be flush again the bone and not the skin BUT because of the swelling there's really not a lot of room to see well enough to know for sure and I would hate to cut her tendon thinking it's something else. Those picture references were perfect from Casportpony but there is more swelling in my ducks hock than in those photos. I "think" I'm look at more pus but without being 100% I don't want to take the chance. I will see how she does with the new regime and if I need to go back in I will be sure to post photos and get opinions. I know you are not vets and I wouldn't hold anyone but myself responsible but it's this or nothing and I don't believe nothing would help in this case lol.

Do you have anything you can gently irrigate the inside of the wound with? That may not work, it just occurred to me. And maybe you've used something like that already.

Yeah I have a syringe with an extended curved tip (my equine vet gave me a ton of these a while back) and I have sterile water so I do flush it when I am poking and prodding but I try to not do that unless I'm fiddling with it, otherwise I just let it drain on its own.

We're pulling for you both.

This is why I asked Casportpony to come and take a look. That is one smart cookie, let me tell you! I have never done anything as invasive as you or as Casportpony. My hat's off to you for doing this. If you can't tell what you're looking at, I too would leave it for now. I'll bet if you did miss some it probably wasn't much. It may be an issue later but before it completely closes up you can always try again. If Casportpony doesn't get back on here you could try to PM and see what kind of advice you will get.

Watch the thing and see how everything is looking, if the swelling is going down nicely and the skin around the sore isn't as inflamed, I would think you could reduce the dose of Duramycin to the 400mg dose after 5 days. This would be 1/2 tabls. per gallon and I would do this for 10-14 days. If you're not comfortable with that or it doesn't seem to be getting better as quickly as it should, you should continue on with the 800mg dose. Staph can be a real bugger to get rid of and if the Duramycin doesn't seem to be doing the trick you may have to switch to the pencillin or one of the others mention in a previous posting. I wish you all of the good luck in the world! What you did was an awesome thing.

I've honestly only started feeling more confident about handling this since I posted here and received such fantastic advice. I'm thankful we've never had to deal with something like this in the years we've had ducks and while I knew what was happening I never thought I would have to handle it myself (that's why I had a vet right? lol) I'm hoping what's left behind will either not be a problem or at least be small enough to let her get better before trying to remove the rest. I saw an old thread here in the millions of bumblefoot threads I've gone through that mentioned soaking the infected foot that was closed up (no open wounds) in Tricide-Neo powder for fish. A lot of people seemed to have great success with that so if the swelling and infection get under control with the Duramycin I may try using that powder to get rid of the rest instead of trying to dig it out in an area I am terrified of lol. If it doesn't work then I would try the surgery again but I would really like to avoid having to put her through that. She sits in her chair loose while I am digging around and she rarely flinches. Makes me feel incredibly guilty. I really wish this was on her foot, it would have made this so much easier on me.

I hear you and if you've found something that worked for someone else and can't find anything to make you think it wouldn't work....go for it! Ultimately, this is all up to you. No pressure here, lol. Seriously though, ya done good!!! Please post any pictures you were able to get and keep the post up to date. You never know who is going to need your info to help another somewhere down the line.
