What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

Not really an update or anything but I wanted to share a cute video of her with you all. This is our "nightly" routine although we do this a few times a day because she is unable to scratch her face to preen. I think it's the only reason she likes me right now lol.

That is just one of the sweetest things I have ever seen!!!

Thank you Bickering. She definitely makes it easier to do all the work I am by being as sweet as she is lol.

Okay new question. I don't feel like she drinks enough water to get a good dose of the Duramycin. She drinks of course, just seems like it's not a lot to me. I'm going to call durvet tomorrow and ask this as well but wanted to get opinions here too. If I can figure out the proper daily dosage can I just mix the powder with a small amount of water in a syringe and give it to her that way so I know she's getting the right amount or does is not really make a difference?

I think the dosing is okay but it can't hurt to find out either. The 800mg dose is a strong one and the reason I recommended using that one is first, flood the body and tissue with the tetracycline and second, I've noticed that ducks might not drink as much as we think they should when they aren't feeling their best. That's why I said if it seems to be working it would be good to tone it down in a few days. One of the worst things we can do is over medicate, it can bring on it's own problems. I do think a phone call is a great idea though. That's what I usually do as well and you'd be amazed at what you can learn!

How does the leg look today? Any heat? Pictures? Awesome video by the way. That little one knows it's loved and I have to say you are creating a monster. Well, not really lol, but Pekins, I've found, who need special care for any length of time, never forget the 'safeness' and love they were given and once well will always come back for it again and again. Not a bad thing unless you're on a ladder painting and the duck is at the base telling you "It's Time For Luvs....NOW". Lol, yeah small price to pay I guess, but the point is, this duck will never forget and will always be 'yours'.

And...to make this post even longer! Lol! I really like the walker you built! Could you post some of the dimensions if you still have the numbers? I'd seen another one that had the top bars up higher than duck's head but where our ducks are so much older, I'm thinking the shorter sides might be much better.

I've honestly only started feeling more confident about handling this since I posted here and received such fantastic advice. I'm thankful we've never had to deal with something like this in the years we've had ducks and while I knew what was happening I never thought I would have to handle it myself (that's why I had a vet right? lol) I'm hoping what's left behind will either not be a problem or at least be small enough to let her get better before trying to remove the rest. I saw an old thread here in the millions of bumblefoot threads I've gone through that mentioned soaking the infected foot that was closed up (no open wounds) in Tricide-Neo powder for fish. A lot of people seemed to have great success with that so if the swelling and infection get under control with the Duramycin I may try using that powder to get rid of the rest instead of trying to dig it out in an area I am terrified of lol. If it doesn't work then I would try the surgery again but I would really like to avoid having to put her through that. She sits in her chair loose while I am digging around and she rarely flinches. Makes me feel incredibly guilty. I really wish this was on her foot, it would have made this so much easier on me.
This bothered me all night, lol. If you do decide to get that med for the feet, one way to 'soak' her feet is by putting it onto the dog pads. She's already standing on one anyways, so this would just be a way to keep her from drinking something she shouldn't. I have no idea what the drug is, and there may not even be an issue with ingestion. Just one of those thoughts that come into my head that won't go away.

I actually thought about that too! I was going to put the solution into either a bag or cup and have her sit in the sling chair with the bag secured to her leg or the cup underneath with me holding it. I didn't want to risk her drinking it and it seems everyone else using that stuff did the same thing, just holding their fowl for the duration of the soak time (which is only 5-7 minutes)

I understand this is good stuff for treating Bumble foot.

Since yesterday there is still heat but not nearly as much as it had been and while there was still some drainage it was not as swollen either which is better than nothing right now.

Her sling/chair is 9 1/2" high 15" long, 12" wide. I adjusted according to her and what she seemed comfortable with. This is not meant for her to really walk in although she certainly can if she wants. I originally did the front lower so she could bob her head down but because I couldn't get her to readily accept any kind of harness system she was able to constantly pull herself out, therefor it was easier for everyone to just keep the front high and she is MUCH happier this way. I think there's a nesting/security feel with the sides higher. I have a small stool that is just a few inches shy of the height of her chair and is perfect to place her food and water bowls on so she can still reach them. I use the puppy training pads on the back part of the chair for when she poops but as you can see I have in some cases not been quick enough to put it on or she missed it and hit the chair instead. The fabric can be easily washed. It's soft felt on the inside and just regular leftover cotton fabric on the outside to keep the felt from over stretching. The pvc parts I actually obtained from one of those 2 part hamper kits from sears or someplace like that. I think it was like 10-15 for the kit. You can certainly get cheaper on pvc parts but that wouldn't include the wheels so this was the cheaper option for me and I was able to repurpose the mesh bags for other things so it wasn't a waste for me. The chair is not really meant as a permenant solution just for a temporary help right now. Should she need something more reliable on a constant basis (as in permenantly handicapped) then I would have to make some adjustments to this chair.
