What do you think the best egg layers are??

I am surprised about the lack of success with the leghorns. They are supposed to be great layers

The sexlinks are supposed to be the best and are bred that way so if thats what you are after, the sexlinks can't be beat.

None of mine have started laying but I did purchase a hybrid leghorn breed from ideal hatchery called the ideal 236 that is supposed to be a great layer, their best, and even better then the standard leghorn. I will let you know of the results when they start.

They are all a couple of years old and up until a few weeks ago I was getting a good amount of eggs. I haven't changed anything in their diet or anything. Maybe the heat is slowing them down, hopefully they will start laying more consistent.

I also have 6 black austrolorpes but they are only about 5 months old. I can't wait until they start laying.

They could be headed into a moult. It could be some stressor, like an illness, worms, even heat. And it could just be age. Commercial egg operations do not usually keep chickens past 2 years for this reason.

You could try worming them, if you do not do so regularly.

I do worm regular, they appear to be normal, now that I think about it a couple of them look like they might be moulting.

Someone told me that chickens lay for years. I guess I was given wrong information.
