Too funny! I bought these hens from a local hatchery where I got to see all of the chickens. I told him I wanted hens not roosters and that I wanted silkies, americonas, and a barred rock. He told me leghorns and Rhode Island reds were good layers and that Marans lay dark eggs.
Not only were most of them roosters, but it seems like none of the chicks I bought turned out to be the right breed (except for the silky!)
Out of 9 chicks, I only ended up with 4 hens. I decided to keep "Rockstar" since he is so funny and takes good care of the hens.
So I have mutt hens. They are beginning to lay eggs!
Lesson Learned: I will buy mine from a better source! (feed store?)
