What do you use in Your Coop?

Everyone seems to say to use pine shavings but i cant use pine shavings because i am alergic to pine.

What else can i use.

Sand. It is the best. Do a search for other threads on the subject.
I have also used chopped leaves. We get a ton of them every fall for free- well free if you don't count the blisters from the raking nut they gotta come off the grass anyway. Nest boxes have either chopped tree leaves or chopped bamboo leaves.

If you can't use pine, I would use sand and maybe hay or straw in the nest boxes. I have sand now and hate doing the scooping. I have serious germ issues and have to take a full shower after scooping because it is SO dusty. But other people love it.

what about cedar shavings? I bought some of those the lady at tractor supply said they would be fine to use. I haven't put them in the coops yet I still have hay. The last of the hay is in the coops I hope cedar in fine. What do you guys think.

cedar oil in shavings can be toxic if eaten. probably only in large amounts, but most people don't use them for that reason.

I use shredded newspaper then compost it. if teh strips are long enough, they don't eat it.

I've only just got my two chooks this week so not really qualified for an opinion but i have sand down with straw in the box. Once my straw is used up i'll be changing over to untreated saw dust (no idea what wood it is sorry but id hazard a guess pine)
