What do you wish you had known before you got your chickens

I got my hens approximately 23 weeks ago. I really haven't seen my husband since we built the coop. I don't watch TV anymore. Haven't read a library book in ages. I just prefer to spend the time with the chickens in the coop, the run and in the green house! they are so interesting and friendly.

I wish I'd have known how quickly THEY can train YOU to do their bidding. I sit down in my camp chair to watch them in the run now and within moments there are.two Sebrights, a Leghorn, and two Orpingtons sitting on the branch giving me that look and waiting expectantly for treats of some kind. You'd think I'd know.better by now than to sit down empty handed. XD

And then there's the crossbeak rooster.who only crows when his food bowl is empty. One neighbor doesn't like the crowing so his food bowl gets filled REAL fast. XD

Same here. I have had my 5 chickens for almost 2 years now. And in July we got 3 ducks. And we also have 3 rabbits. Needless to say I am out in the yard a lot. I enjoy spending time with all of them and watching them do what they do. My husband thinks I spend way to much time with them(I do think he is a little jealous)

lbejaran I absolutely love your menagerie shot! Makes me miss my dog, makes me wish we had a giant coop! and makes me wish for more space! Beautiful!
Thank you! Sandy is getting old (I nearly just typed that she hatched in 2003, hahaha!) and I'm really not looking forward to getting another dog. She's my family's baby and is such a great dog. She never had any issues getting used to the chickens, which was such a surprise considering her parents were both pretty unwelcoming towards most other animals. Even at ten years old, she still plays like a puppy. My lil' sister, Nivia, play-fights with her and Sandy will keep the smaller dogs in check. She even punished our rat dogs when they get out of the yard. Once they come back, she'll scold them and they'll go hide in some hay until she isn't frustrated anymore. Sandy will just huff until she falls asleep, it's hysterical!

Our giant coop is great, I just wish we could finish it. It's a work in progress, but with the addition of some little fancy chicks, I'm glad we have enough room. Thank you, though! I think everyone, even myself, wishes that they had more space. If I had another half acre, I'd be able to get myself a pig, hehehe!

OMG! That video is hilarious and I sound just like that! I was just talking about sneaking some goats in at my house so I could make cheese and soap!
I guess we are all in good company and at least I'm not alone! :p
