What do you wish you had known before you got your chickens

How do you measure a chicken's neck??

Answer: measure the width of bare dirt running along your fence line.
After taking several college math classes, this is truly scientific and logical...

How much blood, sweat, and tears I would put into them. Not to mention money.

How fun they are to watch.

How devious raccoons are.

How much devastation one neighbor dog can bring.

How much I'd love the little things.

How much I would do to save my favorite hen after a dog attack and how worried I'd be about her.

How crazy friends, family, and coworkers would think I am with my chicken obsession.

How chicken math is absolutely real.

How they are sometimes secretly pigs in bird clothing.

How owning them would intensify my desire for things like a good garden, other animals, etc.

How much work (one month's worth) it would be to build them a new coop and run, not to mention the expense.

How much chicken keeping has changed in the last 25 years.

How many years it's going to take to at least break even on expenditures

I wish I would have been prepared to see chickens be bullies to each other. I know it is silly, but sometimes it is actually hard to see the pecking order at work, especially if your favorites are at the bottom.
Yep ..I doink the offender with my finger! We have a no bully policy here!
