What do you wish you knew when you started with finches?

I’m a quail person, but was pondering the idea of finches, and I know better than most that there are many unexpected things you wish you knew when you started; so, I’d love to hear other’s experiences, all finch species welcome!

How much they will reproduce if you don't control it. They are great little birds. I love all the sounds they make. It's hard to deny them hatching eggs. They enjoy being parents.

How much I would enjoy the genetics. So then I would have had my avairies set up better for selective breeding. With more avairies, in the 1mtr wide x 2mtrs high and long type. Then I could have put 3 pairs to an avairy, as this is a good way to select breed while letting the birds make the final decisions.
Also how important morning sun is to such tiny birds in outdoor avairies, and wind protection.
