I'm out of work right now and when I revamped the winter coop last fall for the laying hens I didn't want to spend any money. My husband is a painter, and I repurposed five 5 gallon paint buckets. I made a frame from scrap wood to support the buckets on their sides with a lip along the front to keep the eggs from rolling out and the straw from spilling out. If they are dirty, I can just remove them and give them a good scrubbing. Pickle buckets from a restaurant or deli are even cleaner looking.
I have been thinking of using the 5 gallon buckets. I think they would be easy to clean up. I can just take the pressure washer to them as I do the waterers.
The side hanging nesting boxes didn't work with our design so we had to just build a few inside the coop. I thought they were boring. Our Silkies must think so too because they don't even use them.
