what are yours like and why do you want to change them?

Mine are wood crates and I don't like that the wood looks dirty. So I was trying to come up with something that was more clean.

If it's just that it looks dirty, take an orbital sander to them. You wouldn't believe how bad my rough cut oak looked before I cleaned it up.

I'm out of work right now and when I revamped the winter coop last fall for the laying hens I didn't want to spend any money. My husband is a painter, and I repurposed five 5 gallon paint buckets. I made a frame from scrap wood to support the buckets on their sides with a lip along the front to keep the eggs from rolling out and the straw from spilling out. If they are dirty, I can just remove them and give them a good scrubbing. Pickle buckets from a restaurant or deli are even cleaner looking.

I like looking at everybody's different nest box ideas. All the pics on this thread look great.

This is how I had it at first, but realized I was losing too much usable space in the henhouse. So I got the tools back out and did some carving:

I basically completely rebuilt the interior.

I have 10 standard hens and they haven't begun laying yet, so I have no idea if they'll use both or even touch the nest box below. We'll see. Hopefully soon.

I am currently using a booda dome litter box I found at goodwill. I also have an egg crate, but they all crowd for the booda. I have also used a wicker laundry basket, but they pooped on the top and eggs broke inside.Easier to clean the plastic booda than the egg crate and wicker.
