what does chickens poop so much?

If you think chickens poop a lot you should see geese, I has 12 large geese and it was something to watch. Poo everywhere ...I think that is why God gave them such big flat feet.

I agree with the other posts. Chicken are eating machines. Always scratching and eating. What goes in must come out.

I too am totally amazed by the amount of poop. Mine free range so I do not see much of it - BUT over night under their roost is a metal pan I pull out and clean daily - SO GROSS!!!!! I have a side question - why does the rooster have diarrhea? Is it because he gets layer food too? Is that ok??? Sorry a question in a question.

The old expression "You're eating like a bird" has it backward. Birds eat more compared to their body weight than we ever could. They eat a lot and they poop a lot. And unfortunately chickens don't have enough sense to avoid pooping where they eat and sleep.

They have bad sense of smell, no wonder they don't care where their poop lands

They usually poop after eating something. But not every time. I have food dishes nearby every carpet and towel on the floor. The chickens get used to it.
