what does everyone pay for their feed

I am not sure how often I buy!

how would I find out if there is a coop around me?

any idea:

what do you think 9 standered chickens would eat a month?

or 15 bantams a month?

I don't know for sure about the bantams. I'm sure it will depend on the size of them. My Mille Fleur Booted Bantams eat somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/8 pound of feed per bird per day. My Gold Sebrights (1/2 the size of the Booted Bantams) eat a lot less. I don't know for sure exactly how much less, but a lot less. Sometimes, I think they are living on air and the morning dew!!

But, using the 1/8 pound per bird per day, your 15 bantams should eat somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 pounds in a month. This would make the total feed consumption around 130 pounds. But, they may go through slightly more or slightly less..... depending on how much they waste and how large they are!

Good luck finding a local Co-Op. I really like their pelleted feed..... so do my chickens. Oh, there is another thing that I like about their feed. Unless you supliment it with grains and such, you don't have to supply extra calcium or grit. It's already in the feed.

I come from a cattle farm in Ga. I know all about buying and storing feeds. These days feeds are package to have a shelf life much longer than a mere 30 days in stock. I know cattlemen that buy a years worth of stock feeds because during drought seasons there won't be any if you don't get it while the mill has it.

I wouldn't be buying 100 bags of layer feed. It would be divided up for the cold months here and would be a combination of all the feed we need to get through very cold winter. Starter, grower, layer, cracked corn, wild game bird, turkey ration, caprine feed, sweet feed, hog feed, etc.

Good deal, MissPrissy!! I wish the feed stores around here would do the same. To my knowledge, the only way to get discounts around here are to buy in loose bulk. That generally is done by the dairy farmers, pig farmers, layer farmere, and broiler farmers. But, the rest of us sure could use a bit of a price break too!!


BTW redchicken, I don't know where in PA rchicks is located. But, I did a Yahoo phone search for "Farmers Co-Op" in Pittsburgh, and found "Keystone Farmers Co-Op." If rchicks will try the same search for his/her town/city, there will probably be some results come up!

Poulin Grain which is a family company out of Vermont. I have not bought any scratch yet this season but that is what it usually goes for.
