There are many chicken owners who don't know the difference between pullets and hens as well as cockerels and roosters. To them all females are hens regardless of age as well as all males are roosters. 
I hear it all of the time. We have a couple of swap meets every month and now and then I take a few birds to sell so I hear it a lot.
