I have 10 buff orpingtons that are around 4 1/2 to 5 months old. The past couple of weeks 2 of the girls squat down real low and open their wings a little bit when i go to pick them up. They have never done this before. We don't have a rooster. Any ideas?

It's a sign of submission to a rooster; that's what they do when a rooster approaches for mating. It's also an indicator that they're getting ready to lay eggs pretty soon!!!

That's because they're showing deference to you as the "rooster". It's totally normal.

It seems to start about 2 weeks before the eggs do. It's a little annoying, when you're walking and they stop dead in their tracks. I'm always nearly stepping on chickens!
