Okay, so I've been learneded in Andalusian blue genetics - but what will that splash, if bred to a red or a laced bird, do to the red/gold and/or lacing?

Nothing, Splash has no effect on gold/red tones. It only has an effect of black, turning it blue. So a gold/red bird with black lacing will become a gold/red bird with blue lacing.

I think maybe you are misunderstanding Casey's question. I think what she is asking is: If you breed a solid splash bird to a laced red bird (I assume blue laced red), what happens? (which is you get all blue & splash birds). When I read your response, the way I understand it you are saying is, basically, you get blue laced red if you breed a splash (solid) bird to a gold laced (black laced red) one...but I think you are reading her question as meaning a splash laced bird (e.g., a blue-laced red Wyandotte that is laced in splash) bred to a black laced bird gives you all blue-laced red? I know you know more about genetics than I do.

So I think you are misreading her question.

I wish it was as simple as breeding a splash bird to gold laced to get blue laced red. Then I'd have blue laced red Polish.

Maria,

You are correct. I actually am thinking of working towards BLR cochins

I've got the blue part down pat, but from what I understand, breeding a solid (even a splash solid) to a laced will negate the laced...but I would get blue in there somewhere. Maybe. I'm trying to track down a good chicken genetics book

If solid is dominant over laced and splash dilutes black to blue...then what WOULD I get if I crossed a solid splash with a gold laced (black laced red)? Would the black turn to blue, and the red turn to...? Or would the whole bird be blue? Or some funky non-color?

And then I guess some breed-backs would be in order to pull out recessive genes.

If you bred a splash bird to a gold laced bird, you'd get blues--solid ones. Though I imagine, genetically, that might be "messy" (in that you wouldn't want to breed those solid blues with the intent of breeding blues). I don't really understand pattern genes that well, so I don't know what you'd have to do to get the red & the lacing back into the picture.

The f1s might be split for lacing - the same way birds can be split for mottlling. Then I think if you breed the f1s back to the original laced bird (or another laced bird), you might get laced offspring then. But- like I said before- I'm not too familiar with how the lacing genes work.

Yeah, working this through in my widdle mind...solid splash x golden laced = splash poss w/lacing and/or red "covered"; if I then bred the F1 back to GL, it might bring the recessives back out, hopefully without negating the splash. Dunno yet. It will be worth playing with, I guess

I just checked it out on the calculator: breed a gold laced to a splash, and all offspring should be blue. Breed back to the laced parent, and a couple should approach what you want. It would go faster if you had a flock of each, splash and gold laced, and put the opposite roo in with the girls. That way all the offspring has a laced bird to breed back to. A pretty suprise that the calculator spit out is blue patterned silver laced

Thanks so much! It's nice to know that I'm at least on the right track, though it will obviously take me a while to get there...

Is this calculator online? In a book? Or is it something you just happen to have?
