what does splash do to red/gold? lacing?

Perhaps I have misled you.
If you are trying to make a blue laced red/gold bird from a mating of a Splash Blue to a Black Laced Gold/red bird it will be a longer process.
A few things that will help to know is what breed are you trying to make? Wyandottes, Rocks etc are much different from Polish & Sebrights. Black tails v Laced tails.
What e allele is the Splash, Brown eb or eWh Wheaten will be easier to work with for black tailed birds, but you will need Birchen for laced tails ,again this depends on the breed you are aiming for.
If your Splash bird is Extended Black or Birchen based all your F1 chicks will be Blue, but may have some gold/red breaking through
If Duckwing,Wheaten or Brown you will get Blue Laced Reds, but the lacing will be incomplete or broken.
From there it is a matter of back breeding the blue birds to the laced variety, and selecting.
Repeating until you have colour, pattern & type set.

David, she's working with Cochins. So black tails. I would assume the splash is from blue/black/splash breeding, so would that make it extended black?

Casey, I'm sorry, I'm totally butting in on your thread. And I don't even have cochins or plans to breed blue laced red anything (aside from my blue laced red Wyandottes, which of course someone else already did all the hard work on)!

I just find the discussion fascinating.

I think that catwalk is probably referring to Henk's chicken calculator...I don't have a link, sorry, but someone else should be able to point you in the right direction! I've never played around with it.

I should google it, it always sounded like a lot of fun.

ETA: This chicken calculator is the one I'm thinking of and, yes, I've played with this one before.... http://kippenjungle.nl/Overzicht.htm I'm just a flake.

Have fun.

I'm quoting from David's post, 'cause there's a lot going on here that's admittedly quite over my head.

I think it depends on what your splash bird was based on. You may have had other "stuff" (yeah, that's my technical term...I did say it was over my head, right?

) going on genetically. When I say breed splash to gold laced and get all blue, I'm assuming that the splash is just plain 'ol splash (I *think,* though I am far from sure, it is most common that splash is extended black based, which is what I mean by plain 'ol splash). In which case, you get all blue. Usually. Typically. But not always. Clear. As. Mud. To. Me.

I have NO idea?? LOL

I put a splash Cochin hen of mine into a pen with the golden laced Cochin rooster.

Those were the only two in there.

After about 2 weeks, I collected a few eggs and put them under a broody hen.

Those were the only eggs I gave her and she was in a broody box (no other chickens had access to this area).

She was a Sumatra so not her chick!

One of the two eggs hatched.

Off to find pics...

Maria,

I appreciate you leading me. This is all *somewhat* new to me - I was a bio major in college, but genetics was not necessarily my strong point - but still fascinating. And, as much fun as it is to breed towards type-correct chickens...creating new colors sounds like even more fun to me. And since I love BLRWs, and I love cochins...well, it seemed like the logical next step. Right? Then I can say that I have BLRCs

Not saying I will get there any time soon, but...anyway, feel free to jump in any time!!

David,

My original thought was to take a B/B/S splash (extended black?) and cross it over a GL (red). Then, monitor phenotypes to determine which crosses are which genotype and how to criss-cross the familial & phenotype lines to work towards the correct phenotype. I haven't wrapped my head around making sure that the genotype is correct, also, so that it breeds true. Of course, since I almost failed at my "guess the genotype of the egg based on the phenotype of the parents" game in college...well, I have a lot of learning to do!

I must admit, I'm not overly familiar with the wheaten or duckwing genotypes OR phenotypes...more reading...

I'm going to look crazy when I go on travel for work and am reading a chicken genetics book
