What does the sideways dance by a Roo mean?

Hmmmmm,,,interesting! I will try that for sure. I haven't tried leaning back,,,,perhaps I could get the ball rolling with a little treat on my lap. That would be very cute to have them jump on my lap. Just hope they don't all get brave and try. 23 chickens at once might be a little crazy. I think only Buffy would be brave enough to try this trick and of course being so nosey,,,she would do it I'm sure. She never misses nothing. Julie:p

Ok, well I think this thread needs a theme song.. Hopefully y'all have a good sense of humor.

(no lyrics, just a midi file, but you should be able to recognize it)

Marvin Gaye

FCM...funny! I like the song.

Julie definitely try that with the treat. She goes especially crazy when I am out there eating cake with milk. She can't decide which she wants most...cake or milk. It is downright funny to try moving the cake & glass of milk off of her. I too have other hens that come to me but none jump on me 'cept Big Bertha. She such a flirt! When she jumps on you...rub her wattles and comb and talk slowly at them! They love this...the rubbing of wattles. It's like petting a dog, I guess?

My Bertha will almost go to sleep while I rub the wattles under her beak. One is shorter than the other...

I think that's why she's looking at you all the while...trying to find a vantage point.

Hope it works for you too...it's real neat trick. To have them jump on your lap.

Julie, my EE roo, Rupert, does this dance for me, too. He has a little "song" that goes along with the dance. He loves being held, absolutely adores it, even lays his head on my shoulder.

I think I must have imprinted on him somewhat...I happened to look in the incubator just as he kicked out of the shell and he opened his eyes for the first time. It was a "WOW" moment for me, for sure.

I'm glad you are handling your roosters. I pick mine up, tuck their heads under my arm and carry him around while check on things in the yard. It's a little awkward for me to carry my Jersey Giant roo like this!

McGoo--I know I read something about holding a chicken upside down was harmful. If you want more control of the bird, hold it like a football (its head under your arm looking behind you, his feet in front of your body). I like to support the legs in the same hand. Using my other hand, I place it on the rooster's back and stroke or rub lightly on his back, between the wings.

Thanks hencackle. I'll give that a try. I don't want to hurt him, but do want to keep him under my control.

I just picked him up and he was totally fine with it. I'll keep doing this on a regular basis. Thanks.

Holding a roo upside down is not a good thing... they can easily choke if they have something in their mouth, and their lungs are locatedup close to the spine, inverting them can make organs press against the lungs and make them collapse.

If this happens, the roo will turn blue and suffocate while you can do nothing but watch.

Thank you all for this information. That's why I love this forum. My Roo, Mr. Ed, seems to be fine if I pick him up - so that's what I'll do frequently.

Is it also good to pick up the girls regularly? This sounds like I don't want to but I do. It's just that they seem to runaway everytime I try to pick them up. So instead I just sit at the picnic table and give them snacks and they get right up on the top and we're head to head and we tawk amongst ourselves...

LOLLLLLL,,,,yes, we would get a kick out of my birds attacking my hubby too. My hubby feeds my birds in the morning before I get up and I take the later on feeding so they are friendly to my hubby so far. He doesn't interact with them much like I do though. I am the one always petting and holding and talking to them. He just built their barn,,,,feeds them,,,,you know,,,man things but nothing more than that! He likes my birds though I can tell.
Since we are on the subject of weird behaviors,,,I also have a big buff orpington hen who is always up in my space!! She is the only one who gets in my little space and stares with those big eyes. She is down right nosey or maybe just a piglet always wanting food and treats. She is the first one to always come to me but doesn't want me to pick her up she just is always under me and I've tripped a few times over her. If I squat down she gets inches from my face and just stares. Today she pecked my wedding ring as it was shining in the sun so she thought it might taste good but she doesn't normally peck me. She stands out from my other birds because of her non-skittishness. She just seems plain nosey to me and always in my personal space. The others come around but they tend to their own business,,,scratching and so forth. Buffy,,,on the other hand just stares at me waiting for me to give her something I guess. I don't know what the heck she's doing really but she gets right up to me and stares. She's a big ole girl too. Julie
