I ordered some pullets from Welp back in dec. Dec 2nd was the hatch date. So I hand raised these guys and out of almost 40 only 2 roos. Anyhow my hens/pullets are now going on 5 months and when I walk into the coop and start talking to them they drop down like I am going to mount them. Which obviously isn't gonna happen. I give them a fwe pats on the back and its good. My question is does this have any significant meaning or do they just really like me? lol Is it a sign they may lay soon?

They respect you, aren't afraid of you and will probably lay soon.

Edited to add: and maybe they think you're a hottie

Oh, the squat! They LIKE you - and yes, they'll be laying soon.

I have a couple of hens who squat for me, but not for the roo! *evil grin* Luckily for him, there are other ladies who are more willing.

mine did that also when they were young now they just come running every time they see me hoping for a treat

The squat is submission to a mate or whoever they perceive to be the boss around the coop. If not the rooster, it's their closest humans. It usually precedes the first egg by a couple weeks or more.

Mine too! My BA and BO will squat for me, but would never squat for the rooster...heehee.
And allanimals, not all of mine squatted, but all who began squatting for me began laying within a week or so of do it.

i wondered about this as our Buff Orps and our Buff Rock do this for DH and I! If we go to pick them up for what ever reason, down they go lol

yea all it takes is me walking in there and saying "what?" lol. Quite a few of them squat. they follow me around the coop and when I turn around they squat down. so as I said I give them a good pat and then they are good. lol At least I'm attracting something.
