What Dog Breed Should I Get?

This is my Australian Cattle Dog/ Pembroke Welsh Corgi mix. Very nice dogs.

Beautiful dog... I was actually looking into this mix, seem perfect for daytime LGD/obedience/agility dog. Couple of questions, in your experience, do they drool/shed and have you had experience training to be a part-time LGD?

I feel border collie would be too dominant for my dog... In my 4-H club my friend has one that she takes and it hates him, trying to get into fights with him and snarling if she even sees him. It may just be that dog, but, I have read so much positive about the breed, it breaks my heart to say no.

I am looking for a dog, and need recomendations and opinions. A few stories probably wouldn't hurt either

But first, let me tell you a bit about my lifestyle:

I live in a cozy house with about 5 acres of open pasture and another 55 of mixed wooded/open land in the back of our property. None of it is fenced, except eletric fencing around the horse pasture

I live by a major highway about two miles south of town, so it is busy often

I live with a nine year old, a parakeet and another dog in the house

Also, I have four horses, (we will be breeding one of the mares early spring), an outside cat, and five chickens (so i would prefer not a bird dog) but will be getting more

The dog would need to handle being alone for about nine and a half hours a day, but would be with the other dog (must get along very well, as being a companion for our current dog would be one of many purposes)

I am extremely active in the 4-H dog project and agility, so I would like the dog to be fairly trainable

I prefer medium and up dogs

I am very into cross country and would very much like a running partner

I have a mild animal dander allergy (our curent dog is hypoallergenic) and my parents don't want a severely shedding or drooling dog

I live in a cold climate (Wisconsin)

Note: Please no German Sheperds, my dog seems to have something against them when we go to dog shows and such. Also, absolutely no aggressive or dominant breeds.

I have been thinking about Huskies, or a poodle mix (like my current dog). Bring on the suggestions!

Edit: With more research, I have decided to branch out a bit more than poodles and their mixes. Other suggestions would be appreciated.
I would get a lab shar pei mix or a plain lab or a plain shar pei. Please adopt a dog from the pound!

Here's mine

Let me tell you about Cindy.

She was adopted from the pound and lived on the streets the 1st year or so of her life. She can run up to 25 mph, is a therapy dog, I use her in 4h and we took 2nd over all in obedience, 3rd in fitting and showing and 1st in agility. She runs in lead in my sled dog team She doesn't drool and is mild on shedding. She LOVES kids and she gets along with most dogs and doesn't pick fights. I own 3 other dogs along with her. She love water, snow, sun you name it and can be outdoor dog or indoor. She does need at least one other dog to be with her because she is very pack dependent. She is the best playmate for kids and has a wonderful mellow temperament (Due to Shar pei) She is highly trainable and she likes to go on walks, hikes, camping trips, car rides, and running. Sadly due to her lab side, she does enjoy chasing chickens but hasn't killed one. She doesn't seem to chase horses and wants to be friends with every cat she meets. I live on 15 acres she likes to explore with her buddy(ies)..

I'm not trying to sell her even though it sounds like i am. I'm just telling you about her.

I dont notice my dog, Tex is the name, drooling very much. Maybe a little in the summer. I'm sorry but what is LGD?

Tex is not allowed to be off leash because we have had him only a month now. He is very good at herding the chickens into the coop. Sorry, but does hat that answer your question?

Quote:
all herding is modified prey drive. it's not a "breed" trait. Herding, retrieving and related breeds are all acting on prey drive. The training simply channels that drive in whatever way the human finds most useful. ETA: sorry for the sloppy editing of the "quote" my computer isn't being user friendly today!

I was looking for medium-high energy level, they will be having plenty of playtime. I can handle excessive grooming/bathing just fine, only thing is has to be minimally shedding.
more and more you seem to be pointing towards a poodle ;)

Porties (portuguese water dog), various terriers, and similar breeds are also a possibility. Terriers can do and enjoy agility though some are more independent and prefer to make their own course instead of following directions.

It will depend greatly on what kind of dog person you are. Do you want a "smart dog" or an "obedient dog" Those can often be opposite things. Do you want a dog that works closely with people or do you want a more independent dog? Do you want a dog that always wants to be at your side, follows you room to room like a shadow or do you prefer a dog that is more than happy to chill out in the living room while you do your own thing.
