Something ate only the chicken's neck. Ours are pets and this is our first loss. Kids are a mess. Thanks in advance.

Coons or possums, most likely.
its's ok kids, just happens sometimes, unfortunately.

Yeah they are going to have to get used to it... Just sucks because they are pets more than anything. Kids carry them around and have names for all of them.

Most of my chickens have had names, I started not naming (unless they are distinctive/ favorites) them after Cordelia Corncob was 'got' by a coyote. :(

Now it's just a guessing game. My suggestion is, if you have a game/trail camera put it up because most likely the predator has been lurking looking for an opportunity and finally took it and then you will know what you're dealing with. Good luck...

So sorry for your loss! A juvenile red-tailed hawk killed one of our ducks and also ate only the flesh of the neck; it was picked quite clean just like yours. Not knowing the circumstances, that would therefore be my best guess for your hen.

Where are you located?
the "who dun it "qestion would be better answered with more information supplied by you.
Like where was the body found?
Was the kill done during the day or night?
What kind of fencing or free range?
To me it looks like maybe one kind of critter killed it then rats cleaned the neck to the bone.
