I was reading an article on making quail their happiest, it suggested treats but offered no elaboration on which treats are suitable!

So,just out of curiosity, what fruit or veg do you feed your quail as a treat?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm having trouble finding a relevant thread!

Mine go absolutely nuts over raw black chia seed and to a slightly lesser extent, black oil sunflower seed.

I don't yet have quail, but I'm a vegetarian hog so I feed the animals I do have (and have had, including finches, doves, mice, other rodents) every vegetable I eat except avocado (which is mildly toxic to some animals). The all love it.

If you take fresh carrots and put them in a bowl with a tiny bit of water, you can "steam" them for about 30 seconds and they'll soften up. Most animals LOOOOOVE these.

Another fun thing you could do with quail is what I've seen people do with rats--get a dish that's too-heavy to be moved around (like a glass baking pan) and fill it with water, then put some frozen vegetables like peas, corn, or even rice in there. The quail will "fish" for the little bits of food and in the process have to drink water, too. With rats they hop in and get messy, but with quail you might want to put gravel in to keep them from slipping. :)

Oh, another idea that has worked with my other birds: get a shallow planting container (or even a kitty litter box with holes drilled into the bottom) and plant it with potting soil, then tons of edible, fast-growing seeds. I use things like radishes, corn, lettuces, onions, and other things which grow super fast. I sprout everything and let it grow for 5-6 days, then sit the whole thing into the enclosure.

Every bird species I've met likes to peck around at the plants and the dirt. Some species will dig around (like parrots) or scratch (like chickens) and a lot (like quail, probably!) will "bathe" in the dirt as it dries out. It offers several days if not weeks of nutritious fresh food AND it helps stimulate them socially and neurologically (as does the pea fishing I mentioned above). We tend to overlook our animal's needs for psychological and neurological stimulation but these needs can almost always be combined with feeding them.

Another trick: put live mealworms in an envelope and lightly crumple it. As the worms crawl out the birds will move the envelope around and try to figure out how to get all the worms out.

Side note: this is also healthy for people to watch--it's entertaining and fun. Kids love it. :p

Yes I forgot about other seeds also, I'll bare that in mind!

That sounds like a good fun! Nevermind kids loving it, I know I'll be captivated by that also

Thanks for the tips!

This site is the best for healthy veggies, herbs, plants with incredible health benefits. Each one lists what it can do. I hope this helps. I usually grow half of this stuff around them so they can just peck some off if they want it.
