I got two chickens from my Biology teacher (she hatched them with an incubator in her classroom) and now they're about 4 months old, but I'm not 100% sure of the breed/gender of them. The white one I'm almost certain is a girl, but I'm on the fence with the black one (I want a rooster).
That's the white one (obviously lol). She hatched a few days after the black one.
And here's the black one:
Here's a side-by-side of the two (it's hard to see how big the size difference is. The black one is huge compared to the white). The second picture is an attempt to show how thick the black one's legs are:
Also, what breed?
What's confusing me is that the black one is just that- black. All black. The comb, wattle, earlobes, beak, and legs. The comb/wattle aren't dry and the chicken is just as lively as any chicken I've seen. I'd claim melanism, but it was born with white specks by its eyes and wings and currently has the greenish tint to the feathers.
I've never seen a chicken (even when I google image search) that is all black unless it's that one rare breed, and I definitely don't have one of those.
Whatever is making it all black, I'd like to know what gender/breed they are.
The white one is tiny and has thin legs compared to the black one, and the black one has thinner feathers, but there is very little development in the comb/wattles of either of them. My dad says we have two hens, as does my mother, but I'm not convinced that they're right, considering neither of them has significant or recent chicken experience.
I don't care what breed they are.
Would someone be able to confirm?
It won't be devastating to hear that the black one is a female because my mom has a friend who'll give us a rooster for free if it is.
Said friend is giving us bantam chicks if she hatches enough, and that's regardless of the gender of the two we have, so I might be back later for them lol.
