Part of the difficulty you may have had in sexing this bird is that it isn't a Barred Rock. It is a barred mix of some kind and may even have Dominique or Barred Rock blood, but the barring isn't crisp, the tail has a white splotch and shows some Mediterranean influence, the legs on a BR should be bright yellow at this age, while the bird shown in the photo has white/pink legs. The wings are not indicative of a BR. Sexing BRs is pretty straight forward but they need to be much closer bred to the standard for the feature identification to be reliable. If the bird is a pleasure to you, that is all that matters.
