Can anyone tell me which gender this Barred Rock chicken is? It is about 4 months old.

My 15 week old barred rocks just started developing waffles and their faces are barely red. I don't know much about the "saddle" feathers, that the roo should have at this age, but I don't see them.
Lol so basically I'm useless. It could be either

That's a cockerel. See the long, skinny feathers starting to come in and curve down in front of his tail? Those are saddle feathers.

I wish they were developing waffles. I meant waddles.

I think mine should make my waffles. That would be awesome!

Part of the difficulty you may have had in sexing this bird is that it isn't a Barred Rock. It is a barred mix of some kind and may even have Dominique or Barred Rock blood, but the barring isn't crisp, the tail has a white splotch and shows some Mediterranean influence, the legs on a BR should be bright yellow at this age, while the bird shown in the photo has white/pink legs. The wings are not indicative of a BR. Sexing BRs is pretty straight forward but they need to be much closer bred to the standard for the feature identification to be reliable. If the bird is a pleasure to you, that is all that matters.

Thank you for your observations. We wondered about the color of it's legs. That makes sense.

So perhaps we will just have to wait and see?
