What gender?

When you got them were they day-olds though? They look closer to 8 weeks old to me.

I just checked, and they were three days old when I got them.
Maybe it is how I took the picture, although they are pretty much fully feathered from tail to head; I might say they are 5 inches.

For future reference:
You can mostly tell by wing development on chicks under two weeks. They start getting tiny wingtips at 3-4 days old like on this RIR chick,

by 1 week to 1.5 weeks their wings are mostly feathered, but the rest of the chick is still mostly down.


I recently got these at TSC for $1 each because they were clearing the bins for a new shipment. By wing development I could tell they were at least 5-6 days old. The wings were partially developed, but still had quite a bit of down on them.

Sapphire Gems should be sex linked. Both of yours have noticeable barring and big combs. They're cockerels. The Olive Egger looks female at this point but its a little young to confirm.

Is it bad that they look older than their age?

It’s not bad it just helps when determining gender. They are way too big to be in a brooder regardless of their age.
