What Good Books Have You Read Lately?

I've kept my undergraduate habit of reading 3 or 4 books at a time...only now it is voluntary and my momentary book choice depends on my mood. I always make it a point to read something non-fiction, usually history, then a serious novel or at least an older one, and I must keep a Terry Pratchett novel near me at all times. I agree with you Little Chicky, you never can tell when you will burst out laughing mid-page.

Right now I am reading:

Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett
Nightingale Wood by Stella Gibbons
Mistress of the Monarchy by Allison Weir
Mental Floss History of the World by Erik Sass & Steve Wiegand

You forgot to mention that the XL ex hooker side kick is a black woman with blonde hair and has a fondness for spandex and fried chicken.

And don't forget Cousin Vinny, Joe Morelli and Ranger.

Oh yes! I never know who I like more, Joe or Ranger! They both sound so hot! LOL

Rizq, you will love the rest of the books. Theres only one book i didnt care for until the end but I dont remember wich one it was. You will know it when you start reading it. It has a character named Obba in it. ( if i remember right). But it does alot of building up for the end. AWSOME series. And FYI the first season of the series is being released in October. The Books end with a bang, confessor is a great book. You should order the box sets for Amazon.com that way you got books 4-6 all at once

. Also you should order Debt of Bones and read that before you read any other books. Its about 100 pages long and is about ZED raising the barriers during the war with D'hara.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels. Ive read all of them and love them all. This last one was pretty good but maybe not the best. Ive never watched the series, we are out in the sticks and dont have anything but regular TV. We carry the first season at work but we have been out of stock so i havent been able to pick it up yet. Do any of you read the books like the series? I know the chick from Xmen who played rogue plays sookie, how does she do as the part? Bill doesnt realy look like the bill you picture when you read the series.

I appreciate all the information. It helps alot and hopefuly helps others with book recommendations. I just ordered a box set of books called 'The wheels of time" wich is suppose to be along the lines of JR toilken ( i know i butchered the name).

I am a murder mystery fanatic, love CSI, BONES for sure, and Law and Order . . .reading a very very good book by J.T. Elliot called "all the pretty girls" . . .very very good so far. Sad and horrible in some parts, but very intense about catching the serial killer.

Hey Rizq I forgot to mention (if you didnt already know) Terry Goodkind has another book out called "The law of 7's (or it may be 9s i dont remember lol). The little excerpt I read from it says something about a demon being chained up in a guys basement. I hope its the begging of another fantastic series from Goodkind.

When you do watch the series, don't go in with the impression that it's going to match the books-- because there's a big divergence, both in characters and plot line. Some things are just like they are in the books, and other things are entirely Alan Ball's creation. I like that, to be honest. If everything were the same I'd probably find it pretty boring.

Tara, for example, still exists but is pretty much an entirely different person than in the books. Lafayette has MUCH more to do, and has become my favorite character. Anna Paquin as Sookie....well....let's just say I think it's very hard to adapt the first-person Sookie from the books to the third-person Sookie in the show and still keep her personality. A good deal of the books is composed of Sookie's thoughts to herself, and that just can't come across on screen.

In general, a lot of the plot in the show has been "outsourced" to supporting characters-- Sam, Arlene, Lafayette, Tara, Jason, and other people who either had very small parts in the books or weren't in them at all. And I think that's a good thing, actually. The show is really more all-around drama than straight-up murder mystery. So if you think that sounds like something you'd like to watch, then I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!
