We got our chickens (10) last summer from a friend who wanted out of the chicken business. The first night our dog thought they were play toys for her, after a stern talking to, she has become their protector. She follows them around the yard, actually herds them back to the house if the stray too far. Pretty amazing to watch.
It may be worth the effort to get the neighbors dogs familiar with your birds.
