I just got 3 turkeys from a feed store, also I got some Turkey Grower. This morning one of my hens got in the Turkey coop and was eating their food. Will the chicken be alright?

Thanks

the chicken should be fine... turkey grower is just usually a higher percentage of protein and a few different vitamins.. but nothing that would hurt your chicken..

Though I wouldnt feed it to a chicken all the time since the higher percentage protein isnt what you would want for a laying hen
Most laying hens are on a 16% feed.. where a growing turkey should be on at least a 26% feed

I would NOT worry about that, higher protein one morning is not any different than your chicken getting ahold of a bunch of bugs, a mouse, or some leftover meat. They will not get protein hungry to a point that they will attack other chickens.

Shouldn't cause any problems.. When I add younger (non-laying) birds to my existing flock I always add chick grower to the layer feed.. it helps dilute the calcium for the younger birds and gives the layers a treat. I also keep oyster shell separately for any hen that wants the extra calcium. Never had a problem with cannibalism. My mother had a few issues with her chickens starting to cannibalize.. but hers was an over crowding issue.. not from too much protein in the diet.

I feed turkey grower pellets, 22% protein, to my older RIR hens all the time -- I believe that the extra protein helps then to produce more eggs.

Yeah.. 16% is the norm for a layer.. I have given them 20 & 22% when they needed a boost.. but that's as high as I have gone.
26% and up is a bit too much in my opinion for the average laying hen and the cost of the feed at the higher percentages isn't cost effective for just a few more eggs.

Thanks for the info.

Well, you know how it goes -- 9 chickens, $18.00; feed for a year, $350, coop and run, $800, having your own eggs for breakfast ... priceless.

Besides, they're good girls, they deserve it. I'll probably just end up running an old age home for hens, but c'est la vie.
