So, there is a pretty big thunderstorm happening and I was enjoying it until I had a thought- What if the power goes out? I have week old chicks that would need heat. What would I do if the power went out? I have six.

Are they in your house? If not, you bring them in. For short term, give them a small cuddle box with lots of bedding in it so they can maintain most of their heat. For long term, you use an alternative heat source. A fireplace, propane heater, or even chemical hand warmer packs.

If you dont have a generator, throw a blanket over the brooder asap. You can put hot water (should be some left int he tank and in the faucet) into a ziplock or something like that and cover it with a towel and put it in there. They might huddle with it. Sorry, i always have a backup generator just in case this happens so I'm not sure what else you could do.

Yes, they are in the house. We have a gas fireplace, so would probably put them in front of it.

We had the same thing happen except we had chicks in the process of hatching. It was horrible, we lost power all night and then our incubator malfunctioned and over heated when the power came back on. My husband bought an small generator after that. I would just recommend that as a future investment.

I had 2 power outages while incubating, and the generator did not cooperate. After that, I bought a power convertor that will provide up to 410 W from direct hook up to a car battery or cigarette lighter. It's a handy little gadget, and I've found plenty of use for it, including running a nebulizer treatment for my asthmatic child while on a trip. I also used it to power a heating pad while bringing chicks home from hdw. store! Less than $40 at Walmart!

Wow! I never thought of that. We haven't had to use our generator yet but I have worried about getting it started. Sounds like a great idea and a wise investment.
