What happens when foxes start eating chickens (graphic)

In Catalonia, Spain where I lived for a decade there were many people who took what you describe as the PETA minded person view on the preservation of wildlife above livestock.
Their case was based on what had happened in the Spanish civil war. The retreating International and pro independence army retreated through the North of Spain and the region of Catalonia. Armies need to eat and any edible wildlife that the retreating army could kill got killed to feed the retreating army. Wildlife in Catalonia was all but wiped out. This war was from 1936 to 1939 and the wildlife population has still not recovered and there are some strict laws regarding under which conditions one can kill wildlife that threaten livestock.

Croatia has had a war much more recently 1991 to 1995 and my understanding is the same thing happened to wildlife there.

The preservation of wildlife is a very emotive subject in countries that have experienced the devastation war has on wildlife.
There are approximately three times more chickens in the world than there are people. While I appreciate the distress people feel about losing their pets and sometimes livestock to predation the to protect what's mine and the expense of what doesn't belong to anyone may not be the best environmental option in other places in the world.
I think I love you. :goodpost:

That may be and I get that, definitely a sad situation. But if you google "Croatia Hunting" you will find that it is described as a country that is "rich in hunting tradition and abundant wildlife". That 80% of the country is reserved as hunting grounds and numerous companies that are currently booking hunting tours to Croatia.

I wonder if the average citizen is allowed to hunt, or if hunting is reserved for the political, and rich?
If 80% is hunting grounds it sounds like the government is pulling in as much money as possible booking hunting trips and the general population is SOL.

I can totally see and accept all of that. What bothers me is the personal attacks. I have no issue with Croatian culture as I know very little about it. I claim no cultural superiority. I do take issue with people who take to name-calling and insults. It smacks of someone who doesn't have enough knowledge or empathy to have a truly open dialogue. I would never call another country's people "disgusting" or "uncivilized" just because I disagree with them. My offense lies not with the disagreement; it lies with the unnecessary personal attacks.

I'm aware of this but Croatia is heavily dependant on tourism.

My mom lives in a busy, urban bea h town in Southern California. Her neighbor let her dog out to go pee and a coyote ran off with it. Turns out, it's happened 3 times this summer in her neighborhood. And children have been attacked recently:

They are definitely good for the ecosystem, until they are too numerous.
or we can remember that the coyotes were there before a lot of development pushed them out. coyotes are all over parts of toronto and the greater toronto area, and that's because development has crept outwards. there are lots of parks and forests to live in but they are inside an urban area, so it's inevitable that coyotes will be wandering through. in many neighbourhoods in toronto, you would never let your small dog or cat out after dusk into the backyard, because it's very easy prey.

This.. 100% .
And he still continues with the personal attacks.
I really hope he starts to understand, but I think he doesn't have that capability.

I've been on BYC for a few years, far less than others, but I can't recall another thread where a poster was so rude and insulting.

IMO, he should be banned.

Or we can realize that the coyote population has exploded and is posing a threat to children now.
