what has gone worng with my roo

has he lost his mind lol the hens are like get out i need that box

There's nothing wrong with him at all - It is a normal instinctual behavior for him to coax the girls and help them along with building nests to further aid in the production of offspring, the same as roosters "trill" for them, court them, and look out for them and even the young. A rooster will find anywhere, nesting box or not, that seems adequate as a nesting site, and start building his version of a nest, so that he can attract females to use it.
 
I found my two cochin roosters (best buds) sitting quietly together in the pony's hay box--no clucking, hens nowhere near. it was very weird. My Polish rooster, Oreo, sits on the ground in a corner and clucks to me as he picks at the dirt, like "hey, check this corner out, isn't it great?" LOL
 
My two main roos not only do the nest box thing, but they also sing the "egg song" either for, or with the pullets! As loud as they are, I always know when there's an egg!
