I want to order some chicks, I have heard good and bad about most of the hatcheries. Has anyone had good luck with one particular hatchery?? Thanks...

I have had GREAT luck with Ideal Hatchery. All of my chicks & ducks arrived safely and quickly (from Texas to Vermont). They are healthy, happy, nice looking, and I haven't lost one!

If you want to get less than 25 chicks, I think that only mypetchicken.com and ideal-hatchery.com would work. I believe that ideal is out of most pullets for a while. My pet chicken has a smaller selection but better availability. I personally got my chicks from a feed store, so I don't have any hands on advice for you. Sorry.

I love Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. All of my chicks were in great shape, I did have one weak one that did not make it but I expected that.

They were packed great, shipped quickly and I received them in less than 36 hours from hatching.

They will be a year old on July 21st and doing fabulous. Out of 21 pullets ordered, I received 22, still have 20 and I only received one accidential roo but am happy with him.

My friend ordered 150 Black Australorps from McMurray's and 50 were dead upon arrival and 10 that I bought from her seem to be ok, her sister took the other 75 and most of them died at about 3 months old, I believe she has about 10 that are still alive. They did replace the 50 that were dead upon arrival but it took her months to get replacements. That would just break my heart to receive a bunch of dead little chicks..

I ordered 25 from McMurray and just got them. They all looked good on arrival but we lost one the first night. The rest are doing great.

I personally think it is a combination of the hatchery and the postal service. Even when you order from a reputable hatchery you still run a risk of a lazy or careless postal worker. I live in a small rural community, so our post office is used to chick shipments. They called me before they were even officially open for the day and had the chick inside in a warm room away from drafts. That is not always the case.

Good luck with your new chicks!

Ideal is great. Even though they are sold out for now they occasionally have extras hatch. I got 5 salmon favorelles 6 wks ago even though they were sold out till next year. Call and talk to shannon to get on a waiting list. No guarantees but it's a possibility. Good Luck
