Hi everyone,

My husband travels a ton for work (60ish % of the year), and whenever he’s gone for a big stretch, I find myself looking for new projects. About 7 weeks ago, I decided to get chickens. The day I decided I wanted them, I had 4 one week old chicks in a brooder in my living room by the time I went to bed that night. Now they are 8 weeks old, and they are finally outside. They are so much happier outside(!), and so am I! I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m trying to be the best chicken mom I can be! I’m a real estate agent in Colorado, and I have 3 kids (11, 11, 13) and 1 stepdaughter (6), a 4 yr old labradoodle, and now 3 pullets and a cockerel - Daryl Hannah, Betty White, Egg, and Donny Parton (the rooster). I’m only allowed 4 hens where I live, so I’ll need to find a new home for Donny Parton soon(ish), sadly. He’s so sweet & pretty, and I’m so bummed! Anyway, be expecting to hear from a lot, bc I need a lot of advice!

Chicks/chickens don’t need a shower. A sandbath is their natural way of cleaning. If you put ashes or diatomaceous earth in the sand bath it helps even better to prevent skin, mite or lice problems.

The rooster wil probably be a problem within a month or 2, and has to go if he’s not allowed.

Asking neighbours in advance may help to keep him until you found him a new home. Where I live roosters are allowed as long as no-one complains. Most neighbours are fine with it. One neighbour wakes up from them after sunrise. In spring this is a no go but she is patient in my attempts to find the cockerels a new home.

You can try the selling forum , Craigs list and other options to find a new home for him.

I managed to give away all my cockerels within 3 months after advertising. I always ask people for their intentions with the cockerel(s). Most got a home as companion, to breed (good characteristics) or to alarm a flock for predators.
