STOPPED HEARING taps from inside egg so I cracked it a litlle
(yes I know thats bad)but I was sure it was dead. Well little by little i peeled a little back and no movement at all, no sign of life at all. Ok so I get it back a little and the darn thing starts ti move! now what do I do? can I save this chick. It's day 23-24. remembered seeing something about putting a warm rag over it. I am sitting her now with it in one hand and i can feel it moving through the rag.Help!!! what do I do to save this little thing?

Don't be upset with yourself. I'm sure someone will give you good advice. I think what you're doing is most likely correct.

When you peeled, was there any blood? Was the membrane dry and tough? Did you break it by the beak so it can get air?

If there was no blood, you can carefully peel a tiny bit at a time until the chick can breathe and have enough room to kick out. If the membrane is dry and tough, keep it wrapped in a warm damp (not wet) washrag with the airhole exposed. Put it back in the bator.

If your temps have been low you could have a late hatch and the eggs could go a few days longer than the norm of 21 days incubation.

Breaking the shell of the egg can compromise not only the sterile field of an egg but it is like taking a human baby and damaging the placenta BEFORE birth. Hopefully the membranes did not bleed as you cracked the egg open.

If the chick has not pipped the membrane is how it exchanges external and internal gasses - essentially how it breathes before the transition of hatching switches over to its lungs and breathing as know it.

It is 50 / 50 now as to wether your eggs will pip and hatch and the current baby will live. Opening the bator changes the hatching environment and can easily compromise all the eggs that might pip and try to hatch.

Put it back in and wrap it in a warm wet paper towel or clean cloth.

Thanks for the replies. My broody was hatching them for me. We had 2 that made it and they are adorable. 3 didn't survive though including the one I cracked
