What have you done for your chickens today?

Dumped in a wheel barrow full of sifted sand into the run. For treats, they got a bunch of yogurt, part of a banana, a slice of olive batard bread. Another nice sunny day of 54 degree (F) weather in the redrock desert. I saw a hornet and a honey bee out flying around, I thought that was unusual for this time of year. I was thinking of you guys out in MN though, sending you warm wishes.

Why thank-you, I appreciate that.

I've been through colder weather, but not with my sweet chickens! Tonight I gave them some warm oatmeal and yogurt. They never finish it before it freezes but they still seem to like it. I also nailed a packing quilt up over the single paned window that is already covered in plastic. It will get to -12 tonight. I knew I should have put in a double paned window, dangit.

We have a couple of inches of snow and the temp is hovering at 20. It will go way down tonight. I've gone out several times today to refresh the freezing water with warm water, fed treats of BOSS, grapes, scrambled eggs and grits. Put down more straw and put towels over the vents on the northwest facing wall of coop. Powerful winds all day trying to blow the tarps off the coop. Despite the dark cave they have been in for two days, the 5 girls produced 5 eggs today and yesterday. Oh! and put vaseline on my dear boy's comb--probably didn't need to but he did seem to like it.
Thanks for the tip on massaging everyone's combs. Another excuse for a cuddle.

Went out with a jug of boiling water in each hand to pour in the bottoms of all the waterers to thaw them enough so the birds can get a drink until it warms enough outside for the rest of the ice to thaw. Then I got to do the rest of the morning chores. Dang wind...

I bought them some Dannon Yogurt and some cabbage to help them survive the cold a little better. Brrrrr...

The gals had warm mashed taters ham and some bread for breakfast. They got a mix of veggie this afternoon tossed around the yard so they can explore ans scratch. It was part of the bag from the store. They give me stuff they cant sell veggies galore.
