What have you done today to save money?

we finallly cut the cord with the phone company. with three cells, and wireless internet it was obsolete. also dropped my XM radio. not in the truck long enough to justify it. it all adds up.

My husband and I made a commitment years ago to be financially responsible . The only thing we have purchased on credit in the past 10 years is our house. We save up for everything else and only pay in cash. It is VERY hard to make the transition, but once you do you will end up spending much less overall. I've found I go shopping much less and have trained myself out of impulse-buying.

Today, I planted another section of our garden, so I won't have to buy vegetables over the winter.

This is a great idea if you are starting out or if you have minimum bills to pay.

Also, I have seen more and more people planting gardens and buying chickens this year that in the past. Guess it is due to the economy.

Tonight I had my fried eggs on leftover hot dog buns instead of bread. I had a bonfire last weekend, and had WAY too many buns and hot dogs left over. I froze it all, and am slowly eating my way through it all. I hate to waste anything.

Forgot to add that I raked up my grass clippings to use for mulch on my garden (in addition to old coop bedding)and nesting material. After all, it's really just prairie hay, and it's free. If I had goats or horses, I'd feed it to them, too.

My dad, who is very good with mechanical things, told me to never let my gas tank get under half a tank. It will cause your fuel pump to go out much faster (a $500 fix). I know this is pretty hard to do in these economic times, though.

I have been buying pork fat from the meat processor near my home. 50cents a pound, and I render my own lard.. so easy and so much healthier than Crisco for baking, etc. We have our own eggs, make my own bread and buy extra milk when on sale and freeze it. This really cuts down on trips to the store and the extra buying that comes along with a trip to the store! Also, I use Miss Jayne's recipe for laundry soap... talk about easy and makes a years worth for a few dollars.. clothes wash up beautifully!

Yesterday I:

Created a brooder without using a light. I closed off the sun room and just keep throwing a log in the wood burner during the day to keep the heat up. (there in a wood box with a thermometer in with them.)

Purchase a bike from a man in the neighborhood for 10.00..It's over 30 yrs. old. and has 2 baskets on the back....I used it yesterday to go up to the store...I swear It felt like I just got a new car...(I'm growing... In the right direction...)

Baked bread.

Hung the Clothes (as I do daily)

Didn't use the car

Weeded and picked the bugs off of the plants. (to keep all the vegetables and herds healthy)

Tomorrow I'll be culling 7 roosters for meals.

This past week I bought the "Lunchmeat ends" that they cut off and sell for cheap-o. I made the most tasty cheap soup you can imagine!

We need parts for our pickup. DH spent hours on-line and now he is on the phone trying to find the best deal. He used to be a find what you want and pay whatever they ask, kinda guy! I have trained him well!!

Now he is going to get the tractor out so we can start our Rock Garden. I wanted something at the front of our lawn to separate the gravel driveway from the grass. Both for looks and to keep the gravel off the lawn and away from the mower!

First we thought we should put up a fence. Then he thought of a rock garden. It will be almost free! We live in the country and have field rock piles everywhere! He remembers picking that rock when he was 8 years old, now he is bringing it home!!

Once we get it done I will transplant some perennials and will ask around to see if anyone has some they are willing to part with. If so then it won't cost a thing!!
