I'm beginning to prep for my 1st winter with chickens. What heated waterer do you guys use? Can I just put a heating element into my plastic waterer and let it go from there?

I posted a pic of my outdoor & indoor waterer. Can I use these or probably need something else?

I just ran the electric yesterday so now I need to move onto the next phase.

I use a heated dog bowl. They hold a gallon and cost about $20. Sides are high enuf that the water stays clean.

I've never personally used cups but I think they're the hardest to keep from freezing compared to everything else. I guess it depend how cold it gets where you live.

Last year I used vertical chicken nipples, heat tape and a ton of insulation wrapped around it. The nipples would still freeze when it got cold enough and eventually the cold killed the heat tape.

I just finished making my new waterer using horizontal nipples, a ceramic heat emitter, a 250gph pump to circulate the warmish water and have everything sealed in a box of foam insulation haha overkill.

I like the idea of a de-icer and a nipple waterer. I'm just worried 250 watts is to much on a thin plastic bucket?
