I live close to neighbours and am wondering which breed would be the best and quietest? I know all chickens make noises and I have a nice metal fence and will make a coop that is surrounded in straw. But need some advice on some quiet breeds. I have seen some Barred Rocks, Buff Orphingtons, arucanas, aringdales, speckled sussex, Amerucana, olive eggers, Welsummer, light Braham, and Black Australorp also Rhode island reds. That is the ones I see on Craigslist tonight. But any help on picking the right breed one of these or any other breed that lays good and is quiet? Thanks dave

And of course I am only looking at hens.

My Buff Orps and my Production Reds (sold as RIR) are both loud occasionally, of course when they are laying but also if they feel like it has been too long since they have got to free range or got a handful of mealworms...I am trained very well..... Just as loud as our new rooster. Not so much that anyone has ever complained ....and I give out eggs as peace offerings occasionally. But I am sometimes worried at the noise coming from my little flock of 8.

Vocalization frequency and volume is an individual bird thing, not a breed thing.
......and it can come and go, I've had a few hens that spent hours a day squawking for a couple weeks then stopped.

No guarantees with live animals.
I would expect that they are going to make a lot of noise sometimes, or more or less often.

It's good that you are aware that your neighbors might be disturbed by the noise,
hopefully there is no noise ordinance in your area,
maybe assuage them with fresh eggs?

5 Golden Comets and very little noise. However my neighbor has 3 GC and they are extremely vocal. It depends on the individual chicken not the breed. IMHO
