hi there

don't laugh at my lack of planning.

i have eggs and an incubator coming in the mail.
they both should be here at the same time.

but what should i do if the eggs arrive before the incubator by more than 24 hours?

is there a correct way to store the eggs with minimal downside to their hatch-ability?

sigh.

Yes, you want to store the eggs pointy side down in an egg carton, or whatever to preserve them till incubation. You actually may be fine, since most shipped eggs need to sit for 12 to 24 hours after you get them to let them settle before you incubate them. That is not a hard and fast rule (lots of us have popped them in the moment they got to our house and had great hatches) but it is generally accepted that you want to let the eggs rest and have time for the aircells to settle from a possibly bumpy ride to your place.

Someone Selling eggs on ebay said they would be good as long as they were not older than 3 weeks, that seems a bit old though. I believe it's something like 10 days. I read more on how to store them but I can't seem to find the link. But I think you have to turn them.

I have stored eggs for more than a fortnight before setting them, with little impact on hatch rates. Coolish room with even temperature, out of direct sunlight, move the eggs at least once a day so they're not sitting in the same position for too long. I usually put a thick book under one end of the egg carton so it's sitting at a slanty angle, and then turn the carton a couple of times a day.

If your eggs were fresh before they were sent, an extra day or two won't hurt them any. Being shipped affects hatch rates much more than being stored, so don't stress too much about it.

I just got some brahma eggs out of florida via nc and was having problems with my homemade bator so the eggs ended up sitting for well over 36 hrs before they got put in. I just candeled a cpl of them with a paper twl roll and a halogen flashlight and saw a dark round mass that I couldnt see thru with all of them after 3 days of being in there, I believe this is what I want? First time for this and it is nerve racking...nature can't be this precise you wouldn't think.
Good luck with your hatch
