Chickens will change the way one landscapes. Fences become a standard feature, even the fig "trees" have a fence around them (not that they have fruit this year since we have had less than 4" of rain all year). I am slowly discovering plants that either they don't like or are hardy enough to survive their attention. Holly hocks, Calla Lilly, Passion Flowers and Mesquite (darn, darn darn!) All I know is they lover to wander and are fabulous for insect control. I have seen 6 grasshoppers this year- I had thousands of them last year, literally hanging on the house, porch, fences and jumping out of the grass w/ every step. I had just 12 chicken spring of 2010 and this last spring I had 45 chickens. Now if they only ate fire ants.
