What in the heck is a Fisher Cat?

They look like weasels...

We have mostly trouble with the red tails taking them in broad day light. Do all of God's Predators love chicken as much as me?

A neighbor lost her last 4 chickens recently to a fisher cat (aka pine marten). I've seen them, and though they are active largely at night, if given a buffet like chickens they'll kill at any time. From a distance it looks like the head of a tabby cat, often popping up behind a stump or looking down from a pine tree. They can kill cats and rabbits too, by a bite to the back of the neck. Diana's birds were beheaded. We're in a pine marten restoration area and it's illegal to harm them in any way. A secure coop/run is the only option.

chased one from my coop last year while brandishing an umbrella. Hubby thought I was nuts. Weasel! Weasel at the coop!!! It ran off , he was a big one, close to 4 feet, must have been a male. And the I saw a big one cross the road in front of me one day at dusk. another big one, same one maybe? Thay have a nasty rep. ErinM

They're also one of the only animals that are fast, smart, and ferocious enough to kill porcupines!
