How do the Silver Phoenix do in the snow? A friend said she had some years ago and their tails froze into the snow and had to be rescued. At first I didn't believe a bird could be that stupid....but now that I've had chickens for a few years....well anything is possible.
Ha ha! That sounds funny and awful all at the same time! I had roosts in the coop and in the run for him. He'd jump up there and spend most of his time perching outdoors during the day, and go in to the coop at night to sleep. We covered the run with Visqueen plastic, so there wasn't any snow in there for him or his ladies to get stuck to.
If you were only sticking w/the title of your post, we'd all post very beautiful roo pics which in itself is wonderful but when you choose a roo for the hens, you have to think of size and a few other things because the hens are living w/that roo 24/7. If you put a very large roo in w/small hens, its stressful and they can go into shock if that monster is raping them. If you have a very small rooster with big hens, he can be very annoying trying to mount something far too big and possibly tear off back and wing feathers and both sizes of roo's can leave the combs bleeding from holding onto a hen. A way to avoid this is to have many different sized birds together that are able to wander a large and secure (predator proof) yard. But still, you really should think of the size and breeds, not just the beauty.
u need to make a list of what u like in looks...for example IMO i really think feathers on feet look silly...my partner thinks it looks lovely...i like just a plain single comb thats red, not too fussed on other colours round the face...personal preference...do u like big roos or small? light or dark? 1 colour or lots? high maintenance or low? is the sound of their crow important...they have diff. pitches and loudness...what about personalility...maybe if u ask what breed contains the things u want in a roo it might help...id love a great big roo that has lots of diff. colours and no feathers on his feet...but it wasnt practical, i needed a smaller roo and a really low maint. roo...what in your opinion constitutes (love that word!) a beautiful roo? what features do u like? what is the most practical for ur situation...living and other chooks?
hope that helps
I personally think the Blue Orpington roos are stunning. I don't have a pic of one...but there are several members who have magnificent specimens. I do have 13 Blue Orp chicks...I'm sure there are a few roos in the mix. I will be choosing the best one to keep as my primary B/B/S roo.
