Is a cuckoo a color or color pattern in a chicken?

Cuckoo maran is a chicken breed and the colors are grey and black and maybe whits they look like barred rocks

There are other breeds of chickens with cuckoo pattern--like lemon cuckoo orpingtons. It's named after the cuckoo, the European and Asian species have baring on their chests (where the American species are not barred).
