what is a "designer" chicken?

I have heard this term and wondered what is a designer chicken???

A designer chicken is one which has been deliberately made to look a certain way, often made using a knowledge of genetics.
In ducks there were many designer ducks made from the runners....all of the newer runner based breeds such as Campbells, Harlequins, Appleyards etc. etc. are considered to be designer ducks.

I have seen it used when people are trying to create a consistent
"new" chicken with specific features by combining two different breeds. I think it is also used as a replacement for what is otherwise called mutts or barnyard mixes.

When ppl call the vet and tell us they want a (fill in any breed here)doodle, we tell them to go to the shelter. They can get a perfectly good mixed breed there for around $80 that comes microchipped, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, etc etc vs going to a "breeder" and paying over $1000 for a "labradoodle" aka mutt

Personally, I prefer designer chickens over designer dogs any day !!!

Mutt implies anywhichever breeding--let the birds run free and do what they do. Which is fine; I have a few of those that I wouldn't trade for the world.

In specific, one is a silkieXbrahma and another is a silkieXd'uccle. If I were to deliberately try to recreate these two guys: a "brahsilk' and a "d'uckie," those deliberate crossings would be designer birds.
