I like to think of them as being dinosaur shaped.... Take a look at this artists interpretation of Sinornithosaurus based on its skeleton and feather imprints.

Now take a second look at a Modern Game...

To me, the appeal of these birds is how much they look like a little shadow of the past.

The Old English Game Bantams are so tiny and sweet. Mine eat cherry tomatoes right out of my hand and come up for me to pet them. I don't spend any time trying to work with them but they are still very tame and sweet. If I were to try to spend more time making them into pets, they would be amazing.

I LOVE my OEGBs. They are fabulous, sweet, and gorgeous! I just don't like that they are required to be dubbed for show. That is the only downside IMO. Had I fully understood that when I started with the breed, I may have opted for a different breed that didn't need to be dubbed. Its my own issue, I'm not being critical of anyone.

I have geese and have been thinking about buying the place I rent now. Couple acres, little house, nothing fancy but no land restrictions so I can have chickens, emus, elephants as far as I know.

I have been lurking for awhile but am just now jumping on the band wagon. Ya'll are fun to "listen" to btw.

I am wanting some chickens. Want to just keep one breed. Want some quality birds because I might want to show. Something sweet and isn't going to attack me. I do have some really bad memories of my grandmother's farm. Some chickens just give you that look and they have beady eyes.

What are your suggestions?

id recommend chinese silkies there a smaller chicken that rarely is visious but is good around small children as if it dose peck it barely feels like moscito bite and they crow around mid afternoon as ive experienced

Hello! And
welcome-byc.gif
. I'm sure many will tell you their favorite breeds, so I'll tell you mine

I'm sure no one will argue with Buff Orpingtons, pretty good layers as well as very friendly birds. I have one of these and she is my sweetest bird, she was never handled as a baby and I got her when she was two months old and from day one she would let me pick her up

. She doesn't like it but tolerates it. Also, they will go broody if you want to hatch chicks. Another good breed for beginners is Barred Rocks, generally pretty friendly with people and good layers. I don't like them in a mixed breed flock because they tend to bully other breeds, but very personable with people. Aother one I will mention is Cochin. They are very docile, and very cute with those wide fluffy butts and feathered feet. They make excellent mothers, but not the best layers, maybe 3-4 a week. You can check out the breeds section here on BYC to find out about many other breeds and I'm sure others will give you some great ideas as well. Good Luck!

I was new to chickens last year and so I can only tell you about my experiences.
We started from chicks from Meyer Hatchery 4 easter eggers and 4 marans.
the Easter eggers lay large olive and brown and green eggs daily. We even think one of them is laying more than 1 a day because we occasionally end up with 9 eggs a day. Theyre very friendly and curious and hear and cold tolerant with adorable fluffy necks.
The marans are beautiful old school style hens like what you see in “chicken art” (forgive me). They lay colorful eggs too from pink to blue, medium-large sized once a day. These birds are a little more “flappy” as my husband says. They scare easily by any old thing newly introduced to them. But still lovely birds, good layers, heat and cold tolerant, docile, and all let my kids pick them up and carry them around.
Good luck! Let us know what you end up with and don’t forget those pictures!!!!!
