i was wondering what a good insect repellant was not that im having any problems but i want to be prepared for next summer any advice would be appreciated.

I use Diatomaceous Earth (DE-food grade) in the shavings and on the dirt of the run. That keeps most of the buggies away. What usually gives me fits is flies. Last summer (on the advice of some BYCers) I hung vanilla scented car deodorizers on the run wire. Oddly enough it seemed to help. Weird, eh?

Just make sure it is food grade DE and not the pool kind. The food grade won't hurt you or your chickens. The non-food grade can be bad for them. The food grade is somewhat harder to find.
