And killing birds of prey is illegal and comes with fines &/or prison time. So that is not even an option, word would get out...not worth it in my opinion.

Predator proofing is what you have decided to do and that really is the only way. Having a well trained dog wasn't an option for me but sounds like a good one for you. Good Luck!

I agree....opinions vary, and bashing ethics or what is perceved as "bad" is against the rules. It clearly states that you should keep that part to yourself.

Someone mentioned unintended victims... my dogs stay in my yard, but if my neighbour put out poisoned beef I would entirely expect one of them to cross the line and eat it.

My birds get to go out when I am there to watch them, and they go back in their run when I am in the house. I know they're safe and I haven't endangered wildlife or pets... and my birds have it pretty darn good

I hope you look into getting a dog or keeping the birds enclosed. Vaccines are very protective, but if your dog gets into it with a raccoon you'll probably want to have your vet boost the vaccine. Don't forget too that vaccines are either annual or every 3 years.

no offense to any one but Id protect my chickens at all cost, i havnt let me hens free range bc iam worried of predators bc i done lost a ee roo that was amazing. But iam think about letting them try it out, ANY predator that steps near them will be shot, even if it is a hawk.

Yes i think the hawks are the only ones that are endangered and protected by law. The rest of them I believe are fair game the minute they come on your turf.

I totally agree, "No" I didn't say I'd intentionally try to electrocute and/or shoot any and all things that try to enter my wife's chicken fortress.

That is as long as her (6)six precious chickens remain safe and are not harassed or threatened.

After all they are legal livestock and under Kentucky State law she has the right to protect them.

Thanks Peeps, I will look into the idea of a dog. Will the rabies vaccine totally prevent the dog from having any illness if he gets scratched in a tussle with the predators?

I have had white German shepherds for about 14 years (used to breed them). We have bears, mountain lions, coyotes, racoon's, possums, foxes, stray dogs and a bobcat that actually lives on the property somewhere. The dogs always managed to run everything off, they never got attacked or in a fight with the predators. They did catch and eat rabbits, but yes the rabies vaccine would protect them. I highly recommend shepherds because they are so territorial, nothing was ever able to get close to "their area", they run everything off.

Another note: If you get a male, he will "mark" (you know, pee all over the place) your property. That will also deter predators.

oh, and dixygirl birds can't get rabies. Mammals only. Lucky us
